May all your rules and “wisdom” choke you

While reading a technical discussion forum I was, not for the first time, stuck by some of the comments made by an otherwise cogent developer defending his development language choices. His argument started off well but quickly degenerated to the level of “professional application developers prefer not to…”.

When you resort to phrases like “serious programmers do/don’t”,“professional developers…” and “real programmers should…” you’ve already lost the argument because what you’re really saying, and what everyone else hears, is “why aren’t you more like me?”.

That isn’t going to convince anyone.
